FAQs

Q. Who can benefit from meeting with a Student Success Coach?

  1. Anyone! While all students who arrive at Contra Costa College are capable of success, very few arrive knowing how to take their skills and experience and apply it to the classroom. A success coach can help you identify your strengths and give you recommendations on areas of improvement. There is also a wealth of resources available to you on campus that you may not be aware of or know how to access. A success coach can point you in the right direction!

Q. What is the difference between a Success Coach and a Tutor?

  1. While a tutor is a content-expert, a Student Success Coach helps with the broader skills that are relevant to overall academic success. This can include time management, organization, managing test anxiety, staying motivated, and many others. A Student Success Coach may recommend that a student also meets with a tutor if they are struggling with course content.

Q. How often do I have to meet with my Student Success Coach?

  1. You and your coach will work together to put together a schedule that is mutually beneficial. Some students meet with coaches weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly. Other students many only need one meeting at the beginning of the semester, or before beginning finals, to help them get organized.

Q. How are a Success Coach and a Counselor different?

  1. Success coaches are not academic advisors and cannot answer questions about academic policy, course selection, or progress to degree. Success coaches are also not mental health professionals, and coaching is not therapy or counseling. For more information on academic counseling or wellness counseling, visit the Counseling Department.
